A story in pictures

Films tell stories, some of these stories are beautiful and have happy endings. Other stories are sad and have sad endings. There are many different types of films: romantic comedies, science-fiction films, adventure, thrillers, horror, detective films, etc.

What's your favorite film? This month choose a film you like and watch it in English (with subtitles if necessary). Write a paragraph explaining the story of this film and why you like it. Using the subtitles select 10 expressions you have learned thanks to the film.

Send these tasks to your teacher by email and also publish them online for everybody to read.

Enjoy your films!!! :)

    1. Dear Ariadna,

Mamma Mia is a very nice film and, yes, you "suppose" correctly: I have watched this film many times and I always find it funny and interesting... :)

The summary (not "resum") you have done is very good although there are some minor spelling mistakes that you could have avoided if you revised in the dictionary before writing in the blog. Why don't you try to do so next time, ok?

These are some of your mistakes:

      1. discover with "v" not "B" and in her "mother discovers" we need to put an -s because it is 3rd person singular (he, she, it + v-with s, remember?)
      2. possible with double s and without plural -s at the end because adjectives in English don't have plural, remember?
      3. says with y not "i"
      3. She doesn't say (not doesn't said because "said" is past and you want to create a present simple in negative with doesn't so you need the infinitive of the verb "say", ok?).

Finally, the expressions you have chosen are very nice but you still have to translate them into Spanish or Catalan. Can you do so asap? Thanks!

And, once again, well-done! Continue working hard and watching films in English... :)

    2. Hi Conchi,
The next time I will try to don't make any mistakes.
Yes, I remember but i didn't put the -s in the third person, i didn't remember about the adjectives, I didn't remember about the present simple.

      1-tu debes ser...
2-si la cadena no va a la primera...
3-en mis sueños tengo un plan...
      4-me gusta quejarme.
      5-tu me has
6-una lama en mi alma se esta a punto de quemar.
      7-estoi destrozada.
8-son incontables las veces que he llorado por ti.
      9-nunca habia visto tanto dolor.
      10-esto se va a undir

    1. Dear Judit,

Brave is a very nice film. I watched it in the cinema some time ago and I enjoyed it a lot.

Your summary of the film is very good although there are some minor mistakes you should try to avoid in the future. For example:

      1. She has to repair (not she have!!!!)

      2. The verb ARRIVE has 3 possibilities in English:
      a) arrive in + country, city (e.g. I arrived in Italy, Barcelona, etc)
      b) arrive at + a place (e.g. the airport, the cinema, the bus station, etc.)
      c) arrive HOME
But never, NEVER... arrive TO, ok? ;)

      3. Her mother is a bear (not her mother it's a bear... because the subject of your sentence is "her mother" and then you don't need to put anothe subject ("it"), ok?

Finally, the expressions you have selected are very nice and your translation very appropriate, too. Just revise expression number 6 because in English to say that "algo no es justo" we normally say "it's not fair". Fire means "fuego"... ;)

Well, and that's all. Thanks for your wonderful task in this blog! :)

    1. Dear Sofía,

You have selected a very nice film to watch, too! There are some minor mistakes, though, so pay attention to my comments and try to avoid them in the future. For example:

      1. arrive to --> we never say this in English. Can you please read the explanation I gave about the use of the verb ARRIVE to Judit Chico? With the examples I put in there I am sure you will never make this mistake again... :)

      2. He shows not "he showes"

      3. The adjective "famous" doesn't have an -e at the end, ok? When you are in doubt with words, why don't you doublecheck with a dictionary? That way you would learn many nice words.

      4. abilities in English doesn't have a letter H.

Finally, the expressions you have chosen are very interesting and your translations very accurate so congratulations and continue working hard!!! ;)

    1. Dear Carmen,

Gulliver's Travels is certainly a very nice film, with a lot of action and fantasy. Your summary is very accurate but there are some minor mistakes which produce a bad impression. Have a look at them and try to avoid them next time, ok?

      For example:

      1. I will explain (not "splain"). If you checked in the dictionary, this mistake wouldn't appear.
      2. In English the pronoun "I" is always written in capital letters, not in small case "i", ok?
      3. Adjectives in English don't have plural -s and this includes comparatives (smaller not smallers) and superlatives (the smallest).

Finally, the expressions you have chosen are very nice and the translation is quite good. However, there are some mistakes. Remember that in Spanish "Yo" is with Y and in Catalan with J, so don't mix it, ok? Also, play attention to "acentos" as both in Spanish and in Catalan they are very important. Thus, we write "estás, Qué (interrogativo y exclamativo), quería, fantástica, etc.

Well, and that's all. Good summary. Continue working hard, ok? Bye!

I have seen "GREASE", but it´s not my favourite film. It´s the love history of Danny and Sandy. They met in summer, at the beach. At the end of the summer, they have to go to the institute and their love ends, but for surprice they study in the same institute. But Danny at the school is different from Danny at the beach. He is the leader of T-Birds and Sandy it´s with the Pink Ladies. When the graduation day arrives, Sandy change in a way no one expected.

    The 10 expressions:
-You are fake and a liar
-Do you make fan of my?
-I have no were to hide me
    -Don´t make my laugh
    -It´s almost time to close
    -This es so exciting!

    1. Dear Salma,

Grease is a nice film with lots of beautiful songs so I am sure you will have had a great time watching it. Your summary of the film is fine but there are some minor mistakes you need to pay attention to in order not to make them again in the future, ok?

      For example:

      1. it's a "love story"...because History refers to the subject you study at school, ok? Remember Michael Ende's novel "Never Ending Story" (La Historia Interminable). In Spanish and in Catalan we don't make any distinction between "la historia" (the subject at school where you learn about kings, queens, battles, etc) and "historias" (for example, de miedo, de amor, etc).
      2. Sandy changes (remember verbs in present simple have an -s when the subject is He/She/It or a proper name (e.g. Sandy, Peter, etc).

Finally, the expressions you have chosen are very nice but you haven't translated them into Spanish or Catalan. Can you do so as soon as possible by answering to your entrance in the blog, please?

If you have any doubts, please don't hesitate to ask me, alright? And once again, congratulations for your nice piece of writing in this blog.

Your summary of the film is very accurate and the ten expressions you have chosen are also very nice. Pay attention to the translations. They are good but you have written spelling mistakes while translating into Spanish (for example, you have forgotten many "acentos": corazón, comerá, vacía, etc. And in Spanish "es" doesn't have "acento". In Catalan, yes.)

    1. Dear Lucía,

So you are a real fan of the film "Step up Revolution", right? Your summary sound interesting so I might watch it one of these days. Let's pay attention now to some of the mistakes you have made in this summary:

      1. We cannot say "I was saw" because "was" and "saw" are 2 past simple verbs. If your intention was to make a passive voice, you should have said "this film was seen" although it sounds a bit strange. So the best choice would be: "a film I watched", or "I have seen",ok?

      2. If you speak about a film, the subject pronoun to substitute the title of this film is the pronoun IT so the verb can't be ARE. Thus, you have to say that "Step up Revolution IS... great"

      3. Be careful with pronouns: when you speak about Emily, you say "hic career" and Emily is a girl so you should have used the pronoun "her career as a dancer, her father" etc, ok?

Finally, the expressions you have chosen are very nice and the translation into Spanish is also fine. So congratulations!

    1. Dear Paula,

The film Bee sounds very interesting, too! The summary you have written is nice although you have put a word in Spanish (the huge benefits of being soldiers of abejas??!!!).

The expressions you have chosen are also very interesting. Pay attention when you translate into Spanish or Catalan as both languages have "acentos" and you have omitted them sometimes. For example: te tendré controlado, la mantequilla está para morirse. Finally, pay attention to expression number 10. You have translated it as a question but the word order you have used in English is not a question word order although you have written a question mark at the end. Thus, it should be: Are you embarrassed to be seen with us?

      And that's all. Well-done! Best wishes! :)

    I have seen NIM’S ISLAND.

Nim’s island is the story of one girl called Nim that lives with his father in a lost island. His father went a few days in the sea for a mystery of science and left her daughter alone. One day three men find the island and want to become the island into a summer apartment zone. Nim scares the tourists and she achieves that they go out of the island. When the tourists go out of the island arrives Alexandra in the island, she is a writer and comes to help Nim because She is alone. A day after It arrives his father, and the three live in the island, the Nim’s island. I like this film because is an adventure film and it’s great.

    10 expressions:

•You seized the moment-Que aprovechó el momento
•If someone comes tell him I’m out of expedition-Si viene alguien dile que he salido de expedición
•She thinks I’m you and you don’t even exist-Ella cree que soy tu y ni siquiera existes

    1. Dear Pau,

Nim's Island sounds very interesting. I also like adventure films so I guess I will have to watch it one of these days.

Your summary is very nice too but there are some minor mistakes you should try to avoid in the future. For example:

      1. Pay attention to pronouns. You say: "and left HER daughter alone". But Nim is the daughter and she has a father. Therefore, "and left HIS daughter alone", ok?

      2. It is also important to remember that in English the word order is subject and verb. Thus, when you say: "When the tourists go out of the island arrives Alexandra", you should have written: "When the tourists go out of the island Alexandra arrives", ok? And the same happens in the sentence "A day after it arrives his father". Again, it is more natural to say "his father arrives".

      3. Finally, it's important to remember that in English verbs need a subject. So in the sentence "I like this film because is an adventure film" there is no subject for the verb is. Thus, you should say: "I like this film because IT IS an adventure film".

As for the expressions you have selected, I have to tell you that they are really beautiful and I particularly enjoy sentence number 6: "Become the hero of the story of your life". It's really nice and poetic, don't you think?

Well, and that's all. Well-done and keep on working that hard! :)

      2. Pay attention to the spelling of the preposition WITH and compare my spelling with the way you have written it, alright?

      3. Don't forget the -s in the present simple for HE, SHE and IT. "His dad find the glasses" should be "his dad findS the glasses".

  13. Hi Conchi,
This Christmas I was saw my favourite film that is “Grease”. This film, I like because is a musical, apart from having a story, sing songs and more fun.
The protagonists of the story are called Danny and Sandy, which are two teenagers who meet in the summer and this year that will come is his last year at graduation. For these reasons Sandy thinks he has to go to Australia, but eventually left and goes to the same school as Danny.
Danny in high school is the cool guy who has a group called T-Birds, when reunited with Sandy behaves like a different guy that met Sandy last summer.
Sandy is to get a little lonely, and the group of Pink Ladies tells him one, and Sandy accepts.
After passing the course, when graduation comes Sandy transforms and all teenagers including Danny and Sandy end each with dating and dancing.

    The 10 expressions:
    • Still, I'm no stranger to heartbreak.
    • Saturday night will be our first pep rally and bonfire.
    • Do you think we can let her in the Pink Ladies
    • One of my diamond just fell in the macaroni.
    • I spent most of it at the beach. I met a boy there.
    • You don't want to hear the horny details.
    • I just wanna tell you students that we have a banner year coming up.
    • Go Greased Lightning, you're coasting though the heart lap trials.
    • The least you can do is talk to me after the way you treated me.
    • God, if only I could have a guardian angel to tell me what to do.

    1. Hello Mar!

You have written a fantastic summary of one of your favourite films. There are some mistakes that you should try to avoid in the future but most of them deal with aspects of grammar that you still don't control.

      For example:

      1. This film, I like... is a bit strange as a sentence in English. It would be more natural to say: I like this film because...

      2. I like because is a musical... there is a subject missing before the verb "is", so you need to put "I like this film because it is a musical", ok?

      3. I don't understand this sentence: "Sandy is to get a little lonely, and the group of Pink Ladies tells him one, and Sandy accepts". What do you mean? Who is "him" in Pink Ladies tells him one"? What is "one"?

As for the expressions you chose, they are very nice but you have forgotten to write a translation either into Spanish or Catalan. Could you do so as soon as possible, please?

Thanks and keep on working hard! :)

  14. I have seen Kick-Ass.
Kick-Ass is a comedy movie based in the comic book of the same name.
The film starts when the main character called Dave asks his two friends why no-one has become a superhero in real life. They tell him that it’s impossible because things that appear in comic books can’t exist in real life.
One day, two thieves rob Dave and one of his friends. Then, Dave secretly decides to become a superhero.
After a few weeks training, Dave sees the two thieves that stole him. He hides and puts on a suit he had previously bought on the internet. He confronts them, but one of them stabs him with a knife and, when Dave is trying to escape, a car runs over him.
Dave leaves the hospital after a few months recovering from his injuries. Now he doesn’t feel pain.
After an incident with a group of bad people, he becomes the new internet superstar. He creates a profile on the internet and people in trouble contact him.
When he’s trying to help out the girl he likes, Katie, he meets Hit-Girl and Big Daddy, two real life “superheroes”.
With the help of these two, he will fight the bad guys: a group of gangsters that control the city.

    1. Dear Karla,

Wow!! I am really impressed by the summary you have written. Have you written all this without any extra help? If so, I am very proud of you! ;)

By the way, the 10 expressions you have chosen are also very nice but you have forgotten to translate them into Spanish or Catalan, Could you do so as soon as possible, please?

Thanks and keep on working hard, Karla! ;)
